Book Club Notes from 2/3 April 2011

So did we have a sleep over?  A camp?  NO!  Car batteries let us down and as a result book club was undertaken in two parts: Saturday afternoon on the 2nd (which I was unable to attend) and Sunday morning on the 3rd.  Yes we had bubbles for breakfast!

  • Cheeses chosen were:
    • Paris Creek Brie (South Australian) - was nice but a bit firm for a brie.  Could have been the weather which was a bit fresh!
    • Taleggio (Italian, washed rind soft cheese) - was nice with an interesting consistency.
    • Alexandrina Vintage Cheddar (South Australian) - A nice tasty cheddar.
  • Other Condiments:
    • Quince paste - classic with cheese
    • Grapes
    • Spice Girlz Morrocan Jam
    • Homemade Green Tomato Chutney (S)
    • Waffers
    • Lebanese Bread
  • Wine was Somerled Sparkling Pinot Noir 2008 ($30AUD).
    • Very nice sparkling.  Not sweet but not too dry.  Drinkable now but also cellarable according to Somerled.
  • Chocolate:
    • Cookies and Cream Ice-Cream with hot fudge chocolate sauce:This is a fabulous combination - unfortunately K&S consumed the whole lot on the 2nd and I did not get to sample.  Guess I'll have to make my own :(.  Lindt chocolates were a subsitute on the 3rd.
  • Book theme discussed:
    • A biography of a person who has died - should be their life story (T).
    • Florence Nightingale (S): Did not finish.  Was based on letters that Florence has written. Raised discussion about women in the workforce now and then, balancing career and family.
    • Going Solo by Roald Dahl (about Roald Dahl) (K): Very enjoyable. Would recommend.
    • Storyteller, The Life of Roald Dahl, Donald Sturrock (T): Struggling.  Not finished.  Will continue to read.

  1. Is K a faster reader than T, or did she read the graphic novel version of the life of Roald Dahl?

What is with holding a book club when 2 out of 3 of you have not done the reading?

  2. The trick is to try and bluff your way through it and make people THINK you did the reading - quite a skill

  3. make vague comments like "the character development was interesting?" and then hope the story wasn't about the evolution of ant farming in Antigua? (ps: I don't actually know if they do farm ants in Antigua, it just flowed nicely).
